Treatment of orthorexia
Treatment of orthorexia

Orthorexia is an eating disorder in which a person becomes obsessively focused on “healthy” or “clean” eating, excluding from the diet anything perceived as harmful. Over time, such behavior leads to nutritional deficiencies, social isolation, and increased anxiety, and may progress to more severe disorders such as anorexia or nervous bulimia. Treatment of orthorexia is aimed at restoring a balanced relationship with food and improving psycho-emotional health.

When is treatment for orthorexia required?

  • If eating becomes an obsessive concern and refusal of “unhealthy” food causes anxiety.
  • In cases of significant dietary restriction leading to deficiencies of vitamins and micronutrients.
  • If social interactions decrease due to the inability to eat outside the home.
  • With the development of depression, anxiety, or aggressive reactions toward others’ “unhealthy” eating.
  • If body weight continues to decrease and symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, or menstrual cycle disturbances appear.

How is treatment carried out?

  1. Assessment and consultation with a psychiatrist or psychotherapist – the causes of the disorder and its severity are identified.
  2. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – helps modify obsessive beliefs related to “clean” eating.
  3. Nutritional correction – a specialist develops a balanced diet aimed at restoring adequate nutrient intake.
  4. Pharmacological support – in cases of pronounced anxiety, antidepressants or sedative medications may be prescribed.
  5. Social adaptation – work focused on restoring normal social interactions and reducing food-related fears.

Main treatment methods

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – helps eliminate irrational beliefs about nutrition.
  • Psychotherapy (individual and group) – aimed at increasing awareness of the disorder and forming healthy habits.
  • Nutritional support – assists in creating a diet that meets the physiological needs of the body.
  • Pharmacological treatment – used in cases of anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.
  • Work on self-esteem – an important component of treatment, focused on self-acceptance and reducing perfectionism related to eating.

Advantages of a comprehensive approach

  • Development of a healthy relationship with food.
  • Reduction of anxiety related to “unhealthy” food.
  • Restoration of metabolism and correction of nutritional deficiencies.
  • Prevention of progression to anorexia or bulimia.

When should you seek medical care?

  • If excessive control over eating begins to interfere with daily life.
  • In cases of rapid weight loss and deterioration of well-being.
  • If thoughts about food and its “correctness” become intrusive and anxiety-provoking.
