Dopplerometry (Doppler ultrasound) is a diagnostic method used to assess blood circulation in the fetal, uterine, and umbilical vessels during pregnancy. The technique is based on the use of ultrasound waves that are reflected from moving blood cells, allowing the physician to measure blood flow velocity and volume. Doppler ultrasound helps identify potential impairments in fetal blood supply that may affect fetal growth and overall well-being.
In Belarus, Doppler ultrasound is an important component of pregnancy monitoring, especially in women at increased risk of complications such as fetal hypoxia, Rh incompatibility, multiple pregnancy, or suspected intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
When is Doppler ultrasound indicated?
Doppler ultrasound is performed as part of a comprehensive ultrasound examination during pregnancy. In Belarus, it is indicated in the following situations:
- Follow-up assessment. Doppler ultrasound is usually included in standard prenatal screening at 30–34 weeks of gestation to ensure adequate oxygen and nutrient delivery to the fetus. In certain cases, when clinically indicated, the examination may be performed earlier, starting from around 20 weeks of gestation.
- Suspected impaired blood flow. If a pregnant woman has risk factors such as suspected fetal hypoxia, intrauterine growth restriction, multiple pregnancy, chronic hypertension, or diabetes mellitus, Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate placental and fetal circulation.
- Rh incompatibility and other pregnancy complications. Doppler ultrasound is applied to monitor fetal condition in cases of Rh incompatibility or other conditions that may compromise fetal blood circulation.
- Maternal blood pressure abnormalities. Both elevated and reduced maternal blood pressure can negatively affect placental perfusion, making Doppler assessment clinically relevant.
How is Doppler ultrasound performed?
Doppler ultrasound in Belarus is performed under the same conditions as a standard obstetric ultrasound examination. The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes, is painless, and is considered safe for both the mother and the fetus.
Doppler ultrasound in pregnancy is a valuable and informative diagnostic tool that allows physicians to monitor fetal and placental circulation and to detect complications at an early stage, thereby supporting timely clinical decision-making.
