Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation is a high-tech procedure that involves installing a device that controls the heart rhythm and prevents sudden cardiac death due to life-threatening arrhythmias.

When is ICD implantation required?

In the presence of life-threatening arrhythmias (ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia) , a high risk of sudden cardiac death, in cases of diagnosed heart failure with a high risk of cardiac arrest, or in patients with a history of myocardial infarction. To terminate recurrent episodes of ventricular fibrillation, treat dangerous arrhythmias, and prevent sudden cardiac death in patients with genetic syndromes (long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome).

How is ICD implantation performed?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Electrodes are inserted through a vein and connected to the heart, then the device is implanted under the skin in the chest. After insertion, the doctor programs the ICD according to the patient's individual parameters. The entire procedure takes 1–2 hours, and full recovery takes several weeks.
