Artificial insemination
Artificial insemination

Artificial intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a method of assisted reproduction that helps couples facing difficulties with conception. This procedure can be an effective solution for women with various reproductive disorders, as well as for couples with male infertility.

How is the IUI process performed?

The IUI procedure includes several stages:

  1. Preparation: before insemination, both partners undergo a comprehensive medical examination to identify possible causes of infertility.
  2. Ovulation stimulation: the woman is prescribed hormonal medications to increase the number of maturing follicles and improve the chances of successful conception.
  3. Semen collection: semen may be obtained from the partner or a donor. It is important that the sample is fresh and of good quality.
  4. Insemination: on the day of ovulation, insemination is performed — the semen is introduced directly into the uterus with the use of a special catheter. This procedure is painless and takes only a few minutes.
  5. Monitoring and testing. Two weeks after the procedure, a pregnancy test is performed to determine the outcome.

Indications for artificial intrauterine insemination

IUI may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Ovulation disorders (for example, polycystic ovary syndrome).
  • Mild forms of male infertility (low sperm count or reduced sperm motility).
  • Presence of antisperm antibodies.
  • Unexplained infertility.

Advantages of IUI

  • Minimally invasive procedure: IUI is less aggressive than other methods, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
  • Short recovery period: most women can return to normal daily activities immediately after the procedure.
  • IUI is often available in most reproductive clinics.

Artificial intrauterine insemination is an effective and accessible method of assisting couples with conception difficulties. If you are experiencing challenges in achieving pregnancy, a consultation with a reproductive specialist may be the first step toward resolving the issue. It is important to remember that each situation is unique, and only a specialist can determine the most appropriate approach in a specific case.
