Ultrasound of the scrotum
Ultrasound of the scrotum

Scrotal ultrasound is an imaging examination that allows assessment of the structures within the scrotum, including the testicles, epididymides, spermatic cords, and scrotal coverings. This method helps diagnose various conditions such as inflammation, infections, tumors, varicocele, and other disorders affecting male reproductive health.

When is scrotal ultrasound indicated?

Scrotal ultrasound may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Pain or discomfort in the scrotal area, including swelling or tenderness.
  • Suspicion of tumors or masses in the testicles, such as testicular cancer or cysts.
  • Changes in the size or shape of the testicles, which may be related to inflammatory processes or trauma.
  • Varicocele — dilation of scrotal veins, which can contribute to fertility problems.
  • Scrotal or testicular injuries resulting from trauma or surgical procedures.
  • Male infertility — ultrasound can help identify possible anatomical or functional abnormalities of the testicles.
  • Circulatory disorders in the scrotum, such as impaired venous outflow or hydrocele (fluid accumulation around the testicle).

Advantages of scrotal ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation and is harmless for the patient.
  2. Accuracy — allows precise detection of scrotal pathologies such as tumors, varicocele, cysts, inflammatory changes, and other abnormalities.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure is noninvasive and does not require anesthesia.
  4. Accessibility — scrotal ultrasound is widely available and is a fast, reliable diagnostic method.

How is scrotal ultrasound performed?

During the examination, the patient lies on their back or remains in a seated position. A special gel is applied to the scrotal area to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The physician moves the transducer over the scrotum to examine the testicles, epididymides, spermatic cords, and surrounding structures. The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes and is completely painless.

If varicocele or other vascular conditions are suspected, Doppler ultrasound may be performed to assess blood flow in the scrotal vessels.

Scrotal ultrasound is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where qualified specialists provide accurate diagnostics and offer appropriate treatment recommendations.
