Ultrasound of the salivary glands
Ultrasound of the salivary glands

Ultrasound examination of the salivary glands is a non-invasive and safe diagnostic method that allows physicians to accurately assess the condition of the salivary glands and detect possible inflammation, tumors, stones, and other pathologies. This examination helps identify problems at early stages that may affect salivary gland function and lead to various diseases of the oral cavity.

How is salivary gland ultrasound performed?

The salivary gland ultrasound procedure does not require special preparation and is performed quickly. The patient sits in a comfortable position while the physician applies a special gel to the area where the glands are located. Using an ultrasound transducer, the salivary glands are examined, including the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. The physician may scan the glands from different angles to obtain accurate images and assess their condition.

The procedure usually takes 15 to 20 minutes and does not cause discomfort to the patient.

Indications for salivary gland ultrasound

Salivary gland ultrasound is recommended in the presence of the following symptoms:

  • Pain or swelling in the area of the chin, neck, or oral cavity.
  • Salivary secretion disorders: dry mouth or, conversely, excessive salivation.
  • Impaired salivary gland function detected during clinical examination.
  • A sensation of swelling or palpable lumps in the jaw or neck area.
  • Pain or discomfort during chewing or speaking.

Ultrasound may also be prescribed to diagnose tumors, infectious diseases (such as mumps), or salivary gland stones.

How to prepare for salivary gland ultrasound?

Salivary gland ultrasound does not require special preparation. The patient simply needs to remain relaxed and be able to sit still for several minutes, as the examination may take up to 20 minutes. It is recommended to avoid eating and excessive fluid intake immediately before the procedure to prevent excessive saliva accumulation in the glands.
