X-ray of joints
X-ray of joints

Joint X-ray is a diagnostic method that allows assessment of the condition of bony structures, joint spaces, cartilage, and periarticular soft tissues. The examination is widely used in orthopedics, rheumatology, and traumatology to detect degenerative, inflammatory, and traumatic changes.

When is a joint X-ray required?

In cases of joint pain, swelling, limited mobility, and deformities. For the diagnosis of osteoarthritis, arthritis, gout, degenerative joint disease, and rheumatic disorders. For detection of dislocations, subluxations, intra-articular fractures, and inflammatory processes (synovitis). In cases of suspected joint dysplasia, ligament rupture, and post-traumatic changes.

Types of joint X-ray

  • Knee joint X-ray – diagnosis of osteoarthritis, meniscal injury, and inflammatory changes.
  • Hip joint X-ray – evaluation of dysplasia, coxarthrosis, and femoral head necrosis.
  • Shoulder joint X-ray – detection of dislocations, degenerative changes, and inflammation.
  • Ankle joint X-ray – diagnosis of sprains, fractures, and osteoarthritis.
  • Elbow and wrist joint X-ray – detection of inflammatory changes, osteoarthritis, and trauma.

How is the examination performed?

The patient positions the joint as required, and images are obtained in one or several projections. The procedure takes 10–15 minutes and does not require special preparation.
