Coronary angiography is a high-precision radiographic contrast method for examining the coronary arteries, allowing assessment of their patency and detection of stenoses, thrombosis, aneurysms, and other vascular pathologies. The examination is widely used in cardiology for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and for preparation for stenting or bypass surgery.
When is coronary angiography required?
In cases of angina pectoris, shortness of breath, chest pain, arrhythmias, and high risk of myocardial infarction. How is the examination performed?
The procedure is performed in a catheterization laboratory. A catheter is inserted through the femoral or radial artery and advanced to the coronary vessels of the heart. A contrast agent is then administered, allowing visualization of the vascular network on an angiography system. The physician analyzes the condition of the arteries, identifies narrowed segments, and, if necessary, immediately performs stenting. The examination lasts 30–60 minutes, after which patient observation for several hours is recommended.
