When is CT densitometry required?
The examination is indicated when osteoporosis is suspected, especially in postmenopausal women. It is used in cases of frequent fractures, bone pain, and loss of height. CT densitometry is also recommended to monitor bone density during long-term hormone therapy, as well as in diseases of the thyroid gland or kidneys. It is applied to assess the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment.
How is the examination performed?
The patient is positioned in a computed tomography scanner, where scanning of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, or, in some cases, the entire skeleton is performed. The examination takes 10–20 minutes, is painless, and requires minimal preparation.
