TUR of the bladder
TUR of the bladder

Transurethral resection of the urinary bladder (TUR) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure performed through the urethra without external incisions. The method is used to remove tumors, polyps, and other pathological formations of the bladder, as well as for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic bladder diseases.

When is transurethral resection of the bladder indicated?

  • In the presence of a bladder tumor (benign or malignant).
  • In cases of recurrent polyps or hyperplasia of the bladder mucosa.
  • For removal of foreign bodies, stones, or necrotic tissue from the bladder.
  • For diagnostic purposes when bladder cancer is suspected.
  • In chronic inflammatory conditions that do not respond to medical therapy.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – ultrasound examination, cystoscopy, blood and urine tests are performed; if necessary, MRI or CT is carried out.
  2. Anesthesia – the procedure is performed under spinal or general anesthesia.
  3. Insertion of the resectoscope – an endoscopic instrument is introduced through the urethra into the bladder.
  4. Removal of pathological tissue – tumors or damaged areas are excised using an electrical loop or laser.
  5. Hemostasis and bladder irrigation – bleeding is controlled and the bladder cavity is cleared of resected tissue.
  6. Postoperative monitoring – a urinary catheter is placed for 1–2 days and the patient’s condition is monitored.
