Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to remove overgrown prostate tissue in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The operation is performed through the urethra without external incisions and is considered the “gold standard” of surgical treatment for prostate adenoma.
When is TURP indicated?
- In patients with pronounced BPH symptoms: weak urine stream, frequent urges, difficulty urinating.
- In cases of chronic urinary retention requiring catheterization.
- When medical (drug) therapy is ineffective.
- In the presence of bladder stones associated with BPH.
- In recurrent urinary tract infections caused by urinary stasis.
How is the procedure performed?
- Diagnostics and preparation – prostate ultrasound, blood and urine tests, and PSA level assessment are performed.
- Anesthesia – the operation is carried out under spinal or general anesthesia.
- Endoscopic tissue removal – a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra, and the enlarged prostate tissue is removed layer by layer.
- Hemostasis and bladder irrigation – blood vessels are coagulated to prevent bleeding, and a urinary catheter is placed.
- Postoperative period – monitoring of urination, catheter removal after 1–3 days, and medical follow-up.
Main advantages of TURP in Belarus
- No external incisions and minimal surgical trauma.
- Rapid restoration of normal urination.
- Short hospital stay (1–3 days).
- High effectiveness for small to medium prostate volumes.
- Low risk of complications and recurrence.
The procedure is performed in leading urological clinics in Belarus using modern endoscopic technologies. Experienced surgeons, high-precision equipment, and an individualized approach ensure successful treatment and comfortable recovery for the patient.
