Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is a blood purification method used in chronic kidney failure when the kidneys can no longer perform their function. The procedure helps remove toxins and excess fluid from the body and normalize the chemical composition of the blood, thereby prolonging the patient’s life.

When is hemodialysis required?

  • In end-stage chronic kidney disease.
  • In cases of acute kidney failure when temporary renal support is needed.
  • When blood creatinine and urea levels significantly exceed normal values.
  • In the presence of edema that does not respond to medication.
  • If symptoms of uremia are present (nausea, weakness, seizures, impaired consciousness).

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – blood tests are performed, and vascular access is established (arteriovenous fistula or catheter).
  2. Connection to the machine – the patient’s blood is directed to a dialyzer where it is ΠΎΡ‡ΠΈΡ‰ed of toxins.
  3. Blood filtration – metabolic waste products, excess fluid, and electrolyte imbalances are removed.
  4. Return of blood to the body – the purified blood is returned to the patient.
  5. Monitoring – the physician evaluates the results and adjusts the frequency of sessions if necessary.

Types of hemodialysis

  • Conventional hemodialysis – performed in medical centers 2–3 times per week.
  • Home hemodialysis – possible with appropriate equipment and patient training.
  • Chronic outpatient hemodialysis – performed on a regular basis under medical supervision.
