Circumcision (circumcisio) is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the foreskin of the penis. The procedure may be performed for medical, aesthetic, religious, or hygienic reasons.

When is circumcision indicated?

  • In cases of phimosis (narrowing of the foreskin preventing exposure of the glans).
  • In cases of paraphimosis (acute strangulation of the glans by the foreskin).
  • In chronic balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and foreskin).
  • To improve hygiene and reduce the risk of infections.
  • For religious or aesthetic reasons.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – the physician assesses the condition of the foreskin and orders necessary tests.
  2. Anesthesia – local or general anesthesia is administered.
  3. Removal of the foreskin – the surgeon performs a circular incision and excises the excess tissue.
  4. Suturing – absorbable sutures are applied.
  5. Postoperative care – recommendations are provided for wound care and hygiene.
