Liver transplant
Liver transplant

Liver transplantation is a complex surgical procedure in which a diseased liver is replaced with a donor organ. Liver transplantation is the only life-saving treatment for severe conditions leading to liver failure.

When is liver transplantation required?

  • In end-stage liver cirrhosis.
  • In cases of acute liver failure.
  • In liver cancer when the tumor is non-resectable but has not spread beyond the organ.
  • In congenital liver diseases (biliary atresia, Wilson’s disease, etc.).
  • In autoimmune and metabolic disorders causing irreversible liver damage.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – a comprehensive evaluation of the patient is carried out, and compatibility with the donor organ is assessed.
  2. Waiting for a donor liver – a suitable organ is identified through national and international donor registries.
  3. Surgical procedure – the diseased liver is removed and replaced with a donor liver.
  4. Postoperative period – the patient remains under strict medical supervision, and immunosuppressive therapy is administered.
  5. Rehabilitation – gradual restoration of liver function and adaptation of the body.

Types of liver transplantation

  • Orthotopic transplantation – transplantation of a whole liver from a deceased donor.
  • Living donor transplantation – transplantation of a portion of the liver from a living donor (most often a relative).
  • Split transplantation – division of a donor liver into two parts for transplantation into two recipients.
