Corneal transplant
Corneal transplant

Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) is a surgical procedure involving replacement of a damaged or opaque cornea with a healthy donor graft. The procedure makes it possible to restore vision and improve the quality of life of patients with severe corneal diseases.

When is corneal transplantation required?

  • In keratoconus, characterized by thinning and deformation of the cornea.
  • In cases of corneal opacity caused by trauma, burns, or infections.
  • In the presence of corneal scarring after surgery or inflammatory processes.
  • In congenital corneal disorders that impair vision.
  • When transplantation is the only method to restore vision.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – the ophthalmologist performs a comprehensive examination and determines indications for surgery.
  2. Selection of a donor cornea – identification of a compatible donor graft.
  3. Surgical procedure – the affected portion of the cornea is removed and replaced with donor tissue.
  4. Suturing – fixation of the graft and monitoring of its integration.
  5. Rehabilitation – the patient is followed up by a physician, and therapy is provided to prevent graft rejection.

Types of corneal transplantation

  • Penetrating keratoplasty – complete replacement of the cornea with a donor graft.
  • Lamellar keratoplasty – partial transplantation of the anterior or posterior corneal layers.
  • Endothelial transplantation – replacement of only the damaged endothelial layer.
