Bone marrow transplant
Bone marrow transplant

Bone marrow transplantation is a complex medical procedure in which healthy bone marrow stem cells are infused into a patient. This makes it possible to restore hematopoiesis in diseases affecting the blood-forming system and the immune system.

When is bone marrow transplantation required?

  • In oncohematological diseases (leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma).
  • In severe forms of aplastic anemia.
  • In genetic and autoimmune blood disorders.
  • When chemotherapy has destroyed bone marrow cells and their restoration is required.
  • In cases of congenital immunodeficiency.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – a comprehensive examination of the patient is carried out, and a donor is selected (related or unrelated).
  2. Mobilization and collection of stem cells – bone marrow stem cells are collected from the donor or from the patient (in autologous transplantation).
  3. Myeloablative therapy – chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is administered to destroy diseased bone marrow cells.
  4. Transplantation – stem cells are infused intravenously, after which they migrate independently to the bone marrow.
  5. Rehabilitation and recovery – immunosuppressive therapy and continuous medical monitoring are prescribed.

Types of bone marrow transplantation

  • Autologous – the patient’s own stem cells are transplanted.
  • Allogeneic – stem cells from a compatible donor (related or unrelated) are used.
  • Haploidentical – transplantation from a partially compatible donor.

Main advantages of bone marrow transplantation in Belarus

  • Makes it possible to fully restore hematopoiesis in severe diseases.
  • Increases the chances of recovery in leukemia and other oncohematological conditions.
  • Modern methods reduce the risk of complications and graft rejection.
