Hemisection of teeth
Hemisection of teeth

Tooth hemisection is a surgical procedure in which the affected root of a multirooted tooth (in the mandible) is removed, while the healthy part of the tooth is preserved. This method makes it possible to avoid complete tooth extraction and extend the functional lifespan of the tooth.

When is tooth hemisection required?

  • In cases of destruction of one of the tooth roots due to caries or inflammation.
  • If deep cracks or root fractures are detected.
  • In the presence of a cyst or granuloma that does not respond to conservative treatment.
  • In cases of complications following root canal treatment.
  • When preservation of the healthy part of the tooth is required to avoid implantation.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics – radiographic imaging or computed tomography is performed to assess the condition of the roots.
  2. Anesthesia – local anesthesia is administered to eliminate discomfort.
  3. Tooth sectioning – the surgeon removes the affected root while preserving the healthy portion of the tooth.
  4. Treatment and obturation – the remaining root is reinforced, and prosthetic restoration is performed if necessary.
  5. Rehabilitation – the dentist provides recommendations for post-procedural tooth care.
