Removal of the spleen (splenectomy)
Removal of the spleen (splenectomy)

Splenectomy is a surgical procedure involving removal of the spleen, performed in cases of severe blood disorders, tumors, trauma, and other pathologies. Modern techniques make it possible to carry out the operation with minimal tissue trauma and rapid recovery.

When is removal of the spleen required?

  • Traumatic injury to the spleen accompanied by internal bleeding.
  • Tumors or cysts that impair normal splenic function.
  • Hematological diseases (hemolytic anemia, immune thrombocytopenic purpura, lymphomas).
  • Splenomegaly (pathological enlargement of the spleen) causing impaired blood cell production.
  • Infections or abscesses that do not respond to conservative medical therapy.

Types of splenectomy

  • Laparoscopic splenectomy – minimally invasive removal through small incisions (the preferred method in most cases).
  • Open (conventional) splenectomy – performed in cases of massive bleeding or large tumors.
  • Partial splenic resection – preservation of part of the spleen (used in rare, selected cases).

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, and blood tests.
  2. Anesthesia – the procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
  3. Removal of the spleen – using laparoscopic or open surgical techniques.
  4. Hemostasis and tissue closure – measures to prevent blood loss.
  5. Postoperative period – recovery and monitoring of blood coagulation parameters.

Main advantages of modern splenectomy methods in Belarus

  • Minimal tissue trauma when laparoscopic techniques are used.
  • Rapid recovery – patients can usually return to normal life within 7–14 days.
  • Reduced risk of complications due to advanced surgical technologies.
  • Good cosmetic results – laparoscopy helps avoid large scars.
  • High safety and effectiveness – after splenectomy, splenic functions are partially compensated by other organs.

Procedures are performed in leading surgical clinics in Belarus using modern laparoscopic technologies. Experienced specialists ensure procedural safety, minimal risks, and comfortable postoperative recovery.
