Laparoscopic gastric banding (obesity treatment, bariatrics)
Laparoscopic gastric banding (obesity treatment, bariatrics)

Laparoscopic gastric banding is a minimally invasive bariatric surgery in which a special adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This method reduces the amount of food consumed and promotes effective weight loss.

When is laparoscopic gastric banding indicated?

  • Severe obesity (BMI ≥ 35–40) that does not respond to conservative treatment.
  • Obesity associated with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and other comorbidities.
  • Failure to achieve sustained weight loss through diet and physical activity.
  • Weight control prior to other types of bariatric surgery.
  • Long-term weight management based on a physician’s recommendation.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation. Blood tests, ultrasound examination, and consultations with an endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, and psychologist.
  2. Anesthesia. The operation is performed under general anesthesia.
  3. Laparoscopic access. Surgical instruments and a camera are inserted through 3–5 small punctures.
  4. Band placement. An adjustable band is positioned around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch for food intake.
  5. Band adjustment. The degree of constriction is regulated via a special subcutaneous access port.
  6. Postoperative follow-up. The patient adapts to a new dietary regimen under medical supervision.

Why choose laparoscopic gastric banding in Belarus?

  • Minimally invasive procedure with no large incisions and short recovery time.
  • Reversibility – the band can be removed or adjusted if necessary.
  • Effective weight loss – up to 50% of excess body weight within 1–2 years.
  • Reduction in obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Fast rehabilitation – hospital discharge usually within 1–2 days after surgery.

The procedure is performed in leading bariatric centers in Belarus using modern technologies and an individualized approach for each patient. Experienced surgeons ensure procedural safety, precise band adjustment, and comprehensive support during the rehabilitation period.
