Adrenalectomy (removal of the adrenal glands)
Adrenalectomy (removal of the adrenal glands)

Adrenalectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of one or both adrenal glands. The operation is performed in cases of tumors, hormonal disorders, or other pathologies that pose a threat to the patient’s health.

When is adrenalectomy required?

  • In the presence of adrenal tumors (pheochromocytoma, adenoma, carcinoma, metastases).
  • In cases of hormonally active tumors causing excessive production of cortisol, aldosterone, or adrenaline.
  • In Cushing’s syndrome, a hormonal disorder associated with cortisol overproduction.
  • In primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome).
  • In bilateral adrenal involvement (rare cases requiring lifelong hormone replacement therapy).

Types of adrenalectomy

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy – a minimally invasive approach performed through small incisions.
  • Open (conventional) adrenalectomy – performed via an abdominal or posterior incision, typically used for large tumors.
  • Robot-assisted adrenalectomy – a highly precise technique using a surgical robotic system.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnosis and preparation – imaging studies such as CT and MRI, as well as blood tests to assess hormone levels.
  2. Anesthesia – the operation is performed under general anesthesia.
  3. Removal of the adrenal gland – the surgeon carefully isolates and excises the affected gland.
  4. Postoperative monitoring – assessment of hormonal status after surgery.
  5. Recovery period – hormone replacement therapy may be prescribed if required.

Main advantages of modern adrenalectomy techniques in Belarus

  • Laparoscopic and robot-assisted approaches significantly reduce surgical trauma.
  • Faster recovery compared to open surgery.
  • High precision in tumor and affected tissue removal.
  • Low risk of complications with minimally invasive methods.
  • Long-term improvement of hormonal balance.

The procedure is performed in leading endocrinology and oncologic surgery centers in Belarus using advanced technologies. Highly qualified specialists ensure safe adrenal gland removal, an individualized approach, and effective postoperative recovery.
