Removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy)
Removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy)

Removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) is a surgical procedure performed for malignant tumors, toxic nodular goiter, diffuse toxic goiter, and large thyroid nodules that cause compression of the neck organs. The operation eliminates the underlying pathology and helps prevent complications while maintaining a normal quality of life.

When is removal of the thyroid gland required?

Surgery is indicated in cases of malignant tumors (thyroid cancer). It is also required for toxic nodular goiter that does not respond to medication, significant enlargement of the thyroid gland causing difficulty breathing or swallowing, and ineffective conservative treatment of thyrotoxicosis.

How is the operation performed?

Before surgery, comprehensive diagnostics are carried out, including blood tests for TSH, T3, T4, calcitonin, thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO), ultrasound examination, fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), and scintigraphy. The operation may be performed using a classical open approach through a neck incision or by minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. Depending on the indication, either the entire gland is removed (total thyroidectomy) or only one lobe (hemithyroidectomy).

Main advantages of thyroid gland removal

Complete elimination of the disease and prevention of serious complications. Modern minimally invasive techniques reduce postoperative recovery time. After surgery, patients receive hormone replacement therapy, which allows them to maintain a full and active lifestyle.

Why choose surgery in Belarus?

The procedure is performed in specialized surgical centers in Belarus using advanced medical technologies. Experienced endocrine surgeons apply tissue-sparing techniques, minimizing the risk of complications and ensuring rapid patient recovery.
