Pneumonectomy (resection of the lung)
Pneumonectomy (resection of the lung)

Pneumonectomy is a surgical procedure involving removal of one lung. The operation is performed for malignant tumors, severe infectious lesions, and irreversible diseases of lung tissue when the organ has completely lost its function.

When is pneumonectomy required?

  • In lung cancer when the tumor involves a significant portion of the organ.
  • In advanced tuberculosis accompanied by extensive tissue destruction.
  • In severe abscesses and purulent inflammatory processes.
  • In cases of severe lung trauma not amenable to reconstructive treatment.
  • In fibrotic or sclerotic changes that severely impair gas exchange.

Types of pneumonectomy

  • Open (thoracotomic) pneumonectomy – performed through an incision in the chest wall.
  • Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) pneumonectomy – a less traumatic approach performed through small ports.
  • Radical pneumonectomy – removal of the lung together with surrounding affected tissues (lymph nodes, pleura).

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics and preparation – CT, MRI, PET-CT, bronchoscopy, blood tests.
  2. General anesthesia and connection to mechanical ventilation.
  3. Removal of the affected lung – isolation and ligation of vessels and bronchus, excision of lung tissue.
  4. Hemostasis and bronchial stump sealing – prevention of postoperative complications.
  5. Postoperative care – intensive care monitoring and rehabilitation therapy.

Main advantages of modern pneumonectomy techniques in Belarus

  • High effectiveness in the treatment of oncological and infectious diseases.
  • Modern technologies reduce the risk of complications.
  • Minimal trauma when using video-assisted thoracoscopic approaches.
  • Gradual recovery of respiratory function due to adaptation of the remaining lung.
  • High level of safety and long-term clinical outcomes.

The operations are performed in leading cardiothoracic and oncological centers in Belarus using modern surgical technologies. Experienced surgeons ensure precision of intervention, minimal risks, and the most comfortable possible recovery for the patient.
