Treatment of tuberculosis
Treatment of tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Koch’s bacillus). It most commonly affects the lungs but may also involve lymph nodes, bones, kidneys, and other organs. The disease is transmitted via airborne droplets and requires a comprehensive treatment approach that includes anti-tuberculosis medications, immune system support, and prevention of complications.

When is treatment for tuberculosis required?

  • Persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks, with sputum production or hemoptysis.
  • General weakness, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and prolonged fever.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, and deterioration of overall health.
  • History of close contact with a person with tuberculosis or belonging to a high-risk group (immunosuppression, chronic diseases).
  • Abnormal findings on chest fluorography or chest X-ray.

How is treatment carried out?

  1. Diagnostic evaluation and consultation with a TB specialist (phthisiatrician) – including sputum microscopy and culture, tuberculin skin test (Mantoux test), Diaskintest, chest X-ray or chest CT scan.
  2. Antimycobacterial therapy – prescription of first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs such as isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol.
  3. Immunomodulatory therapy – medications aimed at supporting and strengthening immune function.
  4. Symptomatic treatment – mucolytics, bronchodilators, and vitamin supplementation when indicated.
  5. Physiotherapy and sanatorium-based rehabilitation – to restore lung function and improve overall recovery.

Main treatment methods

  • Combination anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy – administered for at least 6 months or longer, depending on the clinical form of the disease.
  • Multidrug therapy – used to prevent the development of drug-resistant tuberculosis.
  • Surgical treatment (in complicated cases) – resection of affected lung segments.
  • Rehabilitation and recovery – including respiratory exercises, nutritional support, and sanatorium care.

Benefits of comprehensive treatment

  • Effective eradication of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Reduced risk of relapse and severe complications.
  • Improved immune response and general health status.
  • Individualized therapy based on drug-susceptibility testing.

When should medical care be sought?

  • If symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis persist or worsen.
  • In the presence of suspicious radiological findings or after contact with a TB patient.
  • If specialized treatment is required for drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis.

Advantages of tuberculosis treatment in Belarus

Treatment is provided in specialized tuberculosis dispensaries, where modern diagnostic tools, standardized chemotherapy regimens, and structured rehabilitation programs are used to ensure effective disease control and prevent further transmission.
