Sarcoidosis treatment
Sarcoidosis treatment

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of granulomas (nodular inflammatory lesions) in organs and tissues. The lungs and lymph nodes are most commonly affected, but the disease may also involve the skin, eyes, heart, and other organs. Treatment is aimed at controlling inflammation, preventing complications, and improving the patient’s overall condition.

When is treatment for sarcoidosis required?

  • Persistent shortness of breath, dry cough, or chest pain.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes, especially within the chest.
  • Fatigue, fever, weight loss, and night sweats.
  • Involvement of the skin, eyes, or joints.
  • Cardiac rhythm disturbances or signs of pulmonary hypertension.

How is sarcoidosis treated?

  1. Diagnosis and consultation with a pulmonologist or rheumatologist – including lung CT scan, chest X-ray, blood tests, and biopsy of affected tissues.
  2. Anti-inflammatory therapy – systemic glucocorticosteroids (such as prednisolone) are used to reduce immune activity.
  3. Immunosuppressive therapy – cytotoxic or biologic agents may be prescribed in severe or progressive cases.
  4. Symptomatic treatment – oxygen therapy for respiratory failure, as well as medications to support cardiac, ocular, and joint function.
  5. Physiotherapy and pulmonary rehabilitation – aimed at restoring respiratory function and preventing pulmonary fibrosis.

Main treatment methods

  • Glucocorticosteroids – suppress inflammation and reduce granuloma formation.
  • Immunosuppressive medications – used in severe or refractory sarcoidosis.
  • Oxygen therapy – indicated in cases of respiratory insufficiency.
  • Symptomatic therapy – medications to protect and support affected organs.
  • Disease monitoring – regular follow-up examinations to assess disease progression.
