Treatment of chronic bronchitis
Treatment of chronic bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is a long-term inflammatory disease of the bronchi characterized by a persistent productive cough, shortness of breath, and recurrent exacerbations. The condition develops as a result of smoking, air pollution, recurrent respiratory infections, or occupational exposure. Treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation, improving bronchial patency, and preventing complications.

When is treatment for chronic bronchitis required?

  • A productive cough lasting more than 3 months per year.
  • Shortness of breath occurring during physical activity.
  • Frequent exacerbations accompanied by fever, weakness, and malaise.
  • Wheezing or a feeling of tightness in the chest.
  • Regular need for bronchodilator medications.

How is treatment carried out?

  1. Diagnostic evaluation and consultation with a pulmonologist – including spirometry, chest X-ray or chest CT scan, sputum analysis, and bronchoscopy.
  2. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory therapy – antibiotics and corticosteroids are prescribed during exacerbations.
  3. Mucolytics and bronchodilators – used to thin sputum and improve airway patency.
  4. Physiotherapy and breathing exercises – help strengthen the respiratory system and reduce the risk of complications.
  5. Smoking cessation and risk factor control – a key step in stabilizing the disease course.

Main treatment methods

  • Antibiotic therapy (for bacterial exacerbations) – indicated in cases of purulent sputum and fever.
  • Mucolytic and expectorant medications – facilitate sputum clearance.
  • Bronchodilators – improve bronchial airflow and relieve dyspnea.
  • Inhalation therapy – reduces airway inflammation and eases breathing.
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation – includes physiotherapy, breathing exercises, and oxygen therapy when required.

Benefits of comprehensive treatment

  • Reduced frequency of exacerbations and improved quality of life.
  • Prevention of progressive respiratory failure.
  • Symptom relief and partial restoration of lung function.
  • Personalized treatment approach based on disease severity.

When should medical care be sought?

  • If cough persists for more than 3 consecutive months.
  • In case of worsening symptoms, increasing shortness of breath, or hemoptysis.
  • If optimization of long-term therapy is required to control the disease.
