Treatment of bronchiectasis
Treatment of bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease characterized by permanent dilation of the bronchi, accumulation of mucus, and recurrent inflammatory processes. It is accompanied by chronic productive cough, shortness of breath, and frequent respiratory infections. Treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation, clearing the airways, and improving respiratory function.

When is treatment for bronchiectasis required?

  • Chronic cough with production of large amounts of sputum.
  • Frequent exacerbations of bronchopulmonary infections.
  • Shortness of breath that worsens after physical activity.
  • Cough accompanied by hemoptysis (coughing up blood).
  • Progressive weakness, weight loss, and persistent low-grade fever.

How is bronchiectasis treated?

  1. Diagnosis and pulmonologist consultation – investigations include chest X-ray, chest CT scan, bronchoscopy, and sputum analysis.
  2. Antibacterial therapy – antibiotics are prescribed to control infection and prevent exacerbations.
  3. Mucolytic therapy – expectorants and inhalations are used to thin and facilitate sputum clearance.
  4. Physiotherapy and breathing exercises – improve bronchial drainage and ease breathing.
  5. Surgical treatment (when indicated) – in severe or localized disease, resection of the affected lung segment may be considered.

Main treatment methods

  • Antibiotic therapy – suppresses infectious exacerbations and reduces inflammation.
  • Mucolytics and bronchodilators – facilitate sputum expectoration and improve airway patency.
  • Airway clearance techniques and physiotherapy – help remove secretions and restore lung function.
  • Inhalation therapy – humidifies the airways and enhances mucus clearance.
  • Surgical management – in localized bronchiectasis, removal of the affected lung area may be effective.
