Treatment of hemorrhoids
Treatment of hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are varicose dilatations of the veins of the rectum, accompanied by pain, bleeding, inflammation, and prolapse of hemorrhoidal nodes. Without timely treatment, the condition may become chronic and lead to serious complications.

When is hemorrhoid treatment required?

  • Itching, burning, and discomfort in the anal area.
  • Presence of blood in the stool or on toilet paper.
  • Sensation of a foreign body or prolapse of hemorrhoidal nodes.
  • Pain during and after defecation.
  • Chronic constipation that worsens venous congestion in the rectum.

Methods of hemorrhoid treatment

Conservative treatment (Stages I–II)

  • Topical medications (suppositories and ointments with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and venotonic effects).
  • Phlebotropic agents to strengthen venous walls.
  • A high-fiber diet to prevent constipation.
  • Hygienic measures and warm sitz baths with antiseptic solutions.

Minimally invasive methods (Stages II–III)

  • Rubber band ligation – interruption of blood supply to hemorrhoidal nodes, leading to their natural necrosis and detachment.
  • Sclerotherapy – injection of a sclerosant into the node, causing its collapse.
  • Infrared coagulation – thermal energy applied to the vascular pedicle of the node.
  • Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation with rectoanal repair (HAL-RAR).

Surgical treatment (Stages III–IV)

  • Hemorrhoidectomy – complete excision of hemorrhoidal nodes using a conventional surgical technique.
  • Laser hemorrhoidoplasty – effective minimally invasive laser removal of nodes.
  • Stapled hemorrhoidopexy (Longo procedure) – a tissue-sparing operation with rapid recovery.

Recovery after treatment

  • A gentle, fiber-rich diet.
  • Use of healing and anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Stool regulation and prevention of constipation.
  • Regular follow-up visits with a proctologist to prevent recurrence.

Advantages of modern treatment methods

  • Minimally invasive procedures help avoid extensive surgery.
  • Modern surgical techniques ensure faster recovery.
  • A comprehensive approach effectively addresses both symptoms and underlying causes.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • If hemorrhoids are accompanied by severe pain, bleeding, or prolapse of nodes.
  • In cases of persistent discomfort or burning in the anorectal region.
  • If conservative therapy is ineffective and surgical intervention is required.
