Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination that allows visualization of the inner lining of the large intestine in order to detect inflammation, polyps, tumors, and other pathologies. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing colorectal diseases and enables not only inspection of the mucosa but also biopsy and removal of small lesions during the same procedure.

When is colonoscopy indicated?

  • Abdominal pain, chronic constipation, or persistent diarrhea.
  • Presence of blood, mucus, or pus in the stool.
  • Suspected inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease).
  • Detection and removal of polyps to prevent colorectal cancer.
  • Diagnosis of colorectal tumors and precancerous conditions.
  • As part of preventive screening (recommended after 45–50 years of age).

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Preparation. A special diet is prescribed for several days, and bowel-cleansing agents are taken before the procedure.
  2. Anesthesia (if indicated). The examination may be performed without anesthesia, under conscious sedation, or under general anesthesia.
  3. Insertion of the endoscope. A flexible scope with a camera is introduced through the anus and advanced through the colon.
  4. Mucosal inspection. The physician evaluates the intestinal wall, identifying inflammation, ulcers, or neoplastic lesions.
  5. Additional interventions. If necessary, biopsy sampling, polypectomy, or coagulation of bleeding vessels is performed.

Which conditions can be detected by colonoscopy?

  • Colonic polyps and precancerous mucosal changes.
  • Colorectal cancer.
  • Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
  • Diverticulosis and inflammatory conditions.
  • Sources of intestinal bleeding, erosions, and ulcers.

Advantages of the method

  • High diagnostic accuracy and informativeness.
  • Simultaneous biopsy and removal of polyps during the examination.
  • Effective detection of early-stage and precancerous conditions.

When should medical advice be sought?

  • In case of persistent bowel habit changes, abdominal pain, bloating, or discomfort.
  • If blood or mucus is present in the stool, or in unexplained anemia.
  • With a family history of colorectal cancer.

Advantages of colonoscopy in Belarus

In Belarus, colonoscopy is performed in modern diagnostic centers equipped with high-definition endoscopic systems. The option of performing the procedure under sedation ensures maximal comfort for patients while maintaining high diagnostic accuracy.
