Surgical correction of scars
Surgical correction of scars

Surgical scar revision is a plastic surgery procedure aimed at reducing or removing scar tissue, improving its appearance, and restoring normal skin function. The method allows correction of large, hypertrophic, atrophic, and keloid scars, as well as improvement of tissue mobility and skin elasticity.

When is surgical scar correction indicated?

  • Presence of hypertrophic or keloid scars that rise above the skin surface.
  • Scars that restrict skin mobility and limit movement.
  • Post-traumatic, postoperative, or burn scars associated with skin deformation.
  • Pronounced cosmetic defects causing psychological discomfort.
  • Ineffectiveness of conservative methods such as laser therapy, injections, or chemical peels.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Surgeon consultation – clinical evaluation and selection of the appropriate correction technique.
  2. Anesthesia – local or general anesthesia is used depending on the extent of the procedure.
  3. Scar excision – removal of scar tissue followed by precise wound closure.
  4. Skin reconstruction – if required, local flap techniques or tissue grafting are applied.
  5. Rehabilitation – postoperative care includes medications to promote optimal wound healing.

Types of surgical scar correction

  • Scar excision – removal of scar tissue with placement of a cosmetic suture.
  • Z-plasty – transposition of skin flaps to reduce tension and improve functional and aesthetic outcomes.
  • W-plasty – technique used to revise linear scars and make them less noticeable.
  • Dermabrasion and lipofilling – additional procedures to smooth skin relief after scar revision.

Advantages of surgical scar correction in Belarus

Recovery after surgery

  • Use of silicone gels or silicone sheets to support proper scar maturation.
  • Restriction of physical activity and protection of the treated area from trauma.
  • Avoidance of sun exposure during the first months after surgery.
  • Regular follow-up visits with the surgeon to monitor healing.

The procedure is performed in modern plastic surgery clinics using advanced surgical techniques that ensure natural aesthetic results and minimize the risk of scar recurrence.
