Phlebectomy
Phlebectomy

Phlebectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing varicose veins in order to restore normal blood flow and improve the aesthetic appearance of the legs. The procedure is recommended for advanced stages of varicose vein disease when other treatment methods (such as sclerotherapy or endovenous laser ablation) are ineffective.

When is phlebectomy indicated?

  • In cases of pronounced varicose veins accompanied by impaired venous circulation.
  • With persistent heaviness, pain, and swelling in the legs.
  • If varicose disease is associated with trophic skin changes (hyperpigmentation, ulcers).
  • In recurrent thrombophlebitis or when there is a high risk of thrombosis.
  • When conservative or minimally invasive treatments have failed.

Types of phlebectomy

  • Conventional phlebectomy – removal of the vein through small incisions using special surgical instruments.
  • Miniphlebectomy – a minimally traumatic technique involving vein removal through micro-punctures.
  • Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) – closure of varicose veins using laser energy.
  • Combined phlebectomy – a combination of several techniques to achieve optimal clinical and aesthetic results.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnosis and preparation – duplex ultrasound scanning of the veins and laboratory tests are performed.
  2. Anesthesia – the procedure may be carried out under local, spinal, or general anesthesia.
  3. Removal of varicose veins – the surgeon makes small incisions or punctures to extract the affected vessels.
  4. Hemostasis and closure – vessels are treated to prevent bleeding, sutures are applied if necessary.
  5. Postoperative recovery – the patient is advised to wear compression garments and limit physical activity for several weeks.
