Adenotomy
Adenotomy

Adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing hypertrophied adenoids (enlarged lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx). This condition most commonly affects children and can cause nasal obstruction, recurrent infections, and hearing impairment. Surgery is recommended when conservative treatment is ineffective and enlarged adenoids continue to interfere with normal airway function.

When is adenoidectomy indicated?

  • Persistent nasal obstruction due to enlarged adenoids interfering with normal airflow.
  • Frequent upper respiratory tract infections, including sinusitis, tonsillitis, and otitis media.
  • Hearing impairment caused by Eustachian tube obstruction due to adenoid hypertrophy.
  • Chronic snoring or episodes of sleep apnea.
  • Lack of response to medical therapy with progressive adenoid enlargement and complications.

How is adenoidectomy performed?

  1. Preoperative preparation includes clinical examination, blood tests, and consultation with an otolaryngologist.
  2. Anesthesia – adenoidectomy may be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and individual indications.
  3. Adenoid removal – the surgeon removes the hypertrophied lymphoid tissue using specialized instruments. Modern techniques include laser adenoidectomy, radiofrequency ablation, or endoscopic adenoidectomy, which reduce bleeding risk and shorten recovery time.
  4. Postoperative period – the patient is observed for several hours or up to one day (depending on the surgical technique) and can usually return home the same day.

Advantages of adenoidectomy in Belarus

  • Complete restoration of nasal breathing.
  • Reduction in the frequency of upper respiratory tract infections.
  • Elimination of snoring and improvement in sleep quality.
  • Rapid recovery, especially with minimally invasive techniques.

Recovery after adenoidectomy

  • Soft diet: avoidance of hot, spicy, and solid foods during the first postoperative days.
  • Restriction of intense physical activity for 1–2 weeks.
  • Regular nasal irrigation and humidification as prescribed by the physician.
  • Follow-up visits and strict adherence to medical recommendations to prevent complications.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • In cases of persistent nasal obstruction, especially when associated with recurrent infections.
  • If a child snores at night or has symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing.
  • In the presence of chronic ear infections or hearing loss.
  • When conservative treatment fails and adenoid hypertrophy progresses.

In Belarus, adenoidectomy is performed in modern ENT clinics equipped with advanced endoscopic and laser technologies. Physicians use gentle and minimally invasive techniques, which reduce the risk of complications and shorten the recovery period.
