Septoplasty
Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated nasal septum. Septal deformity may be congenital or acquired (most often as a result of trauma) and can lead to impaired nasal breathing, chronic sinusitis, recurrent headaches, and snoring. The procedure helps restore normal airflow, improve quality of life, and prevent the development of ENT disorders.

When is septoplasty indicated?

  • Persistent nasal obstruction that does not respond to medical therapy.
  • Recurrent sinusitis, rhinitis, or otitis caused by impaired nasal ventilation.
  • Chronic snoring and obstructive sleep apnea associated with septal deviation.
  • Post-traumatic septal deformity causing breathing difficulties and discomfort.
  • Headaches, constant nasal congestion, and reduced sense of smell.

How is septoplasty performed?

  1. Diagnostic assessment – nasal endoscopy, X-ray, or CT scan to evaluate the degree and location of septal deviation.
  2. Preoperative preparation – laboratory tests and consultation with an ENT specialist and anesthesiologist.
  3. Anesthesia – the procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia.
  4. Septal correction – the surgeon removes or repositions deviated portions of cartilage and bone.
  5. Septal fixation – internal splints or nasal packing are used to stabilize the septum during healing.
  6. Postoperative monitoring – the patient is usually observed for 1–2 days.

Types of septoplasty

  • Conventional surgical septoplasty – performed through intranasal incisions.
  • Endoscopic septoplasty – a minimally invasive technique with improved visualization and reduced tissue trauma.
  • Laser-assisted septoplasty – suitable for selected cases involving mild cartilaginous deviations.

Results of septoplasty

  • Restoration of unobstructed nasal breathing.
  • Reduced frequency of inflammatory ENT conditions.
  • Improved sleep quality and elimination of snoring.
  • Shorter recovery period when endoscopic techniques are used.

Recovery after septoplasty

  • Avoidance of physical exertion for 2–4 weeks.
  • Limitation of exposure to dust and allergens.
  • Use of saline solutions to moisturize the nasal mucosa.
  • Follow-up visits with the physician to assess healing and prevent complications.
