Selecting a hearing aid
Selecting a hearing aid

A hearing aid is a medical device designed to compensate for hearing loss. Proper selection of a hearing aid depends on the degree of hearing impairment, the patient’s lifestyle, and individual needs. Modern hearing aids are equipped with digital technologies that improve speech intelligibility and ensure comfortable sound perception.

When is hearing aid fitting required?

  • In cases of diagnosed hearing loss when medical or surgical treatment has not been effective.
  • If there are difficulties understanding speech in noisy environments.
  • When it is necessary to increase the volume of the television or communication devices.
  • In unilateral or bilateral hearing loss that affects quality of life.
  • In age-related hearing loss associated with natural changes in the auditory system.

How is a hearing aid selected?

  1. Hearing assessment – audiometry is performed to determine the degree and type of hearing loss.
  2. Consultation with an audiologist – the specialist analyzes test results and recommends the most suitable device.
  3. Selection of a hearing aid model – based on the type of hearing loss, patient preferences, and budget.
  4. Fitting and programming – the device is individually programmed according to the patient’s hearing profile.
  5. Training and adaptation – the patient receives instructions on use, care, and adaptation to the new device.

Types of hearing aids

  • Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids – worn behind the ear, suitable for moderate to severe hearing loss.
  • In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids – discreet devices placed inside the ear canal, suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss.
  • Digital hearing aids – provide precise adjustment and high-quality sound processing.
  • Analog hearing aids – more affordable devices with fewer adaptation options.

Adaptation after hearing aid fitting

  • Adaptation to the hearing aid usually takes from several weeks up to one month.
  • Regular fine-tuning helps maintain optimal sound quality.
  • Proper hygiene and maintenance are essential for long-term device performance.
  • Follow-up visits with an audiologist are recommended every few months.
