Removal of tumors of the middle and outer ear
Removal of tumors of the middle and outer ear

Tumors of the middle and external ear are benign or malignant neoplasms that may cause hearing loss, ear pain, discharge, and functional impairment of the auditory system. Surgical removal of the tumor is required to prevent further growth, eliminate symptoms, and avoid complications, including damage to the auditory nerve and spread to adjacent anatomical structures.

When is removal of ear tumors indicated?

  • Persistent hearing loss, tinnitus, or a sensation of ear fullness.
  • Ear pain, inflammation, or pathological discharge caused by the tumor.
  • Rapid growth of the lesion or a tendency to bleed.
  • Dizziness, balance disturbances, or discomfort in the ear region.
  • Suspicion of malignancy, which requires urgent surgical intervention.

How is the surgery performed?

  1. Diagnostic assessment – otoscopy, audiometry, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biopsy when required to determine the nature of the tumor.
  2. Selection of the surgical approach – the surgeon chooses the most appropriate method (endoscopic, laser-assisted, or microsurgical).
  3. Anesthesia – the procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on tumor location and extent.
  4. Tumor excision – the lesion is removed with maximal preservation of surrounding healthy tissues.
  5. Postoperative rehabilitation – antibiotic therapy, antiseptic care, and follow-up monitoring are prescribed.

Methods for removal of ear tumors

  • Endoscopic surgery – allows tumor removal via the external auditory canal without external incisions.
  • Laser excision – a minimally invasive technique associated with rapid healing.
  • Microsurgical excision – used for deeply located or complex tumors.
  • Radiofrequency surgery – reduces bleeding risk and accelerates recovery.

Advantages of surgical treatment

  • Complete tumor removal with minimal tissue trauma.
  • Preservation of hearing function, especially with early diagnosis.
  • Reduced risk of recurrence and complications.
  • Fast recovery following minimally invasive techniques.

Recovery after surgery

  • Protection of the ear from water exposure and infection during the early postoperative period.
  • Limitation of physical activity and avoidance of pressure changes.
  • Regular follow-up with an ENT specialist to monitor healing.
  • Additional treatments (radiation therapy or medication) if clinically indicated.

Advantages of ear tumor removal in Belarus

In Belarus, such procedures are performed in leading medical centers using modern microsurgical, laser, and endoscopic technologies. This approach ensures safe tumor removal, preservation of hearing, and minimal surgical trauma.
