Polypotomy of the nasal cavity
Polypotomy of the nasal cavity

Polypectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing nasal polyps from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Nasal polyps are benign growths of the mucous membrane that can cause nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, reduced sense of smell, and chronic nasal discharge. The procedure helps restore nasal breathing, improve quality of life, and reduce the risk of recurrent chronic rhinosinusitis.

When is nasal polypectomy required?

  • Persistent nasal obstruction that does not respond to medical treatment.
  • Reduced or complete loss of the sense of smell (hyposmia or anosmia).
  • Chronic nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and recurrent nasal infections.
  • Headaches, sleep disturbances, or snoring caused by nasal polyps.
  • Multiple or large polyps that significantly impair normal breathing.

How is polypectomy performed?

  1. Diagnosis – nasal endoscopy and CT scan of the paranasal sinuses are performed to assess the number, size, and location of polyps.
  2. Choice of removal method – the surgeon selects a conventional, endoscopic, or laser technique depending on polyp characteristics.
  3. Anesthesia – the procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia.
  4. Polyp removal – polyps are removed using a surgical loop, endoscopic instruments, or laser technology.
  5. Postoperative therapy – anti-inflammatory treatment and intranasal corticosteroid sprays are prescribed to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Polypectomy techniques

  • Conventional loop polypectomy – mechanical removal of polyps.
  • Endoscopic polypectomy – a minimally invasive technique allowing precise removal with minimal tissue trauma.
  • Laser polyp removal – used for small polyps and associated with faster healing.

Advantages of polypectomy in Belarus

  • Restoration of normal nasal breathing.
  • Reduced recurrence rate when combined with comprehensive postoperative therapy.
  • Short rehabilitation period, especially with endoscopic and laser techniques.
  • Minimal tissue trauma due to the use of modern surgical technologies.

Recovery after surgery

  • Avoidance of physical exertion and overheating during the first weeks after surgery.
  • Use of moisturizing and anti-inflammatory nasal medications as prescribed.
  • Follow-up visits with an ENT specialist to assess treatment outcomes.
  • Recurrence prevention – allergy control and regular nasal saline irrigation.

In Belarus, nasal polypectomy is performed in modern ENT clinics equipped with endoscopic, laser, and microsurgical technology, ensuring effective removal of polyps with a low risk of recurrence.
