Endoscopic sinusotomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at removing pathological contents from the paranasal sinuses and restoring normal nasal breathing. The operation is performed through the nasal passages without external facial incisions, which significantly reduces the rehabilitation period. This method is used for chronic sinusitis, polyps, cysts, and other sinus conditions that do not respond to conservative medical treatment.
When is endoscopic sinusotomy indicated?
- In chronic maxillary sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, ethmoiditis, or sphenoiditis accompanied by persistent nasal congestion and headaches.
- When conservative therapy is ineffective and sinus inflammation persists for a prolonged period.
- In the presence of cysts, polyps, osteomas, or other pathological formations that impair normal sinus ventilation.
- With constant headaches, facial pressure, or orbital discomfort associated with sinus obstruction.
- If the inflammatory process poses a risk of spreading to the orbit or intracranial structures.
How is the procedure performed?
- Diagnostics – CT scan, MRI, or nasal endoscopy is performed to determine the exact localization of the pathology.
- Anesthesia – local or general anesthesia is used, depending on the complexity of the intervention.
- Removal of pathological contents – the surgeon inserts an endoscope through the nasal cavity, enlarges the natural sinus opening, and removes pus, cysts, polyps, or inflamed mucosa.
- Irrigation and drainage – antiseptic and anti-inflammatory solutions are introduced into the sinus; in some cases, a temporary drain is placed.
- Rehabilitation – the patient may be discharged on the same day or within 1–2 days after surgery.
Advantages of the method
- No facial incisions due to the endoscopic approach.
- Minimal tissue trauma and rapid recovery.
- Complete elimination of chronic infection and pathological formations.
- Reduced risk of recurrence when combined with comprehensive treatment.
- Improved nasal breathing and overall well-being.
Recovery after endoscopic sinusotomy
- Nasal irrigation with special solutions to prevent infection.
- Restriction of physical activity during the first weeks.
- Avoidance of allergens and polluted air.
- Regular follow-up visits with an ENT specialist to monitor healing.
