Endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy
Endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy

Endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at restoring the patency of the nasolacrimal duct in cases of obstruction. The operation is performed through the nasal cavity without external incisions, making it one of the safest and most aesthetic methods for treating chronic dacryocystitis (inflammation of the lacrimal sac) and excessive tearing.

When is endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy indicated?

  • In cases of persistent tearing and inflammation of the lacrimal sac.
  • When the nasolacrimal duct is obstructed and conservative treatment is ineffective.
  • In chronic dacryocystitis accompanied by swelling and redness in the inner corner of the eye.
  • With recurrent purulent eye discharge associated with infection.
  • When there is a risk of complications such as abscess or phlegmon of the lacrimal sac.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Diagnostics – probing and irrigation of the lacrimal duct, dacryocystography, and CT scan of the paranasal sinuses are performed.
  2. Anesthesia – the procedure is carried out under local or general anesthesia.
  3. Creation of a new drainage pathway – the surgeon endoscopically forms a new route for tear drainage into the nasal cavity.
  4. Placement of a silicone stent – a temporary tube is inserted to prevent re-narrowing of the duct.
  5. Rehabilitation – the stent is removed after 1–2 months, and normal tear drainage function is fully restored.

Advantages of the method

  • No external incisions or visible scars.
  • Minimal tissue trauma and rapid recovery.
  • High effectiveness in chronic dacryocystitis and nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
  • Lower risk of recurrence compared to conventional surgical techniques.
  • Improved quality of life due to elimination of persistent tearing and inflammation.

Recovery after surgery

  • Use of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory eye drops as prescribed.
  • Avoidance of trauma to the nose and periocular area.
  • Restriction of physical activity during the first weeks.
  • Follow-up visits with an ophthalmologist and ENT specialist to assess outcomes.
