Treatment for snoring
Treatment for snoring

Snoring is a sound caused by vibration of the soft tissues of the pharynx and larynx during sleep. It may be not only uncomfortable for others, but also a sign of serious breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, a condition characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. Treatment of snoring is aimed at eliminating its underlying causes and restoring normal breathing at night.

When is treatment for snoring required?

  • If snoring is loud and persistent and disturbs a bed partner or family members.
  • In cases of breathing pauses during sleep (apnea), which may lead to oxygen deprivation and excessive daytime fatigue.
  • If a person experiences morning headaches, dry mouth, daytime sleepiness, or chronic tiredness.
  • In the presence of excess body weight, deviated nasal septum, or chronic ENT diseases that may contribute to snoring.

Methods of snoring treatment

Conservative treatment

  • Weight reduction – in obesity, fatty tissue in the neck area can narrow the airway.
  • Avoidance of alcohol and sedative medications, which relax the pharyngeal muscles and worsen snoring.
  • Use of special devices (for example, oral appliances that hold the lower jaw in a forward position).
  • Positional therapy – sleeping on the side may reduce snoring in some patients.
  • Use of nasal dilators – devices that widen the nasal passages.

Device-based treatment (CPAP therapy)

  • Used in obstructive sleep apnea, where a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device delivers constant airflow to keep the airway open during sleep.

Surgical treatment

  • Laser uvuloplasty – removal of excess soft palate and uvula tissue using a laser to enlarge the airway.
  • Radiofrequency ablation – reduction of soft tissue volume in the pharynx using radiofrequency energy.
  • Surgical correction of a deviated nasal septum if snoring is caused by nasal obstruction.
  • Tonsillotomy (removal of enlarged tonsils) when tonsillar hypertrophy interferes with breathing.
