Treatment of clubfoot in children
Treatment of clubfoot in children

Clubfoot in children is a congenital or acquired deformity of the feet in which the foot is twisted inward, mobility is limited, and normal gait is disturbed. Without timely treatment, clubfoot may lead to permanent deformities, chronic pain, and significant difficulty in walking. Modern correction methods make it possible to fully eliminate the deformity and restore normal foot function.

Causes and risk factors of clubfoot

  • Congenital abnormalities of intrauterine development.
  • Genetic predisposition.
  • Impaired innervation of the lower leg and foot muscles.
  • Muscle imbalance associated with neurological disorders.
  • Abnormal fetal position during pregnancy.

Symptoms of clubfoot in children

  • Inward rotation of the foot and deformity of the lower leg.
  • Restricted movement in the ankle joint.
  • Abnormal gait and limping.
  • Rapid fatigue during walking.
  • Formation of calluses and uneven weight distribution on the foot.

How is clubfoot diagnosed?

  1. Orthopedic examination. Assessment of foot position, joint flexibility, and gait.
  2. Foot X-ray. Helps determine the severity of bone and joint deformities.
  3. Ultrasound of soft tissues and muscles. Evaluates the involvement of ligaments and tendons.

Treatment methods for clubfoot in children

Conservative treatment (for congenital clubfoot).

  • Ponseti method. Serial casting with gradual correction of foot position.
  • Orthopedic braces, splints, and special fixation devices. Used after casting to maintain correction.
  • Therapeutic exercise (physical therapy) and massage. Strengthen muscles and help restore correct foot alignment.
  • Physiotherapy (electrical stimulation, paraffin applications). Improves tissue elasticity and blood circulation.

Surgical treatment (for severe or rigid forms).

  • Achilles tendon lengthening. Restores normal ankle and foot motion.
  • Correction of foot and lower leg bones. Used for rigid deformities resistant to conservative treatment.
  • Osteotomy. Surgical alteration of bone angles to achieve proper load distribution.

Advantages of modern treatment approaches

  • Early correction often eliminates the need for surgery.
  • The Ponseti method is recognized as the gold standard for treating congenital clubfoot.
  • Physiotherapy and orthopedic techniques help restore a normal gait.
  • Surgical intervention is reserved only for complex cases.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • If foot deformity or restricted ankle movement is noted in an infant.
  • In cases of abnormal gait, limping, or rapid fatigue during walking.
  • If conservative treatment is ineffective and surgical correction is required.
