Metatarsalgia treatment
Metatarsalgia treatment

Metatarsalgia is pain located in the forefoot, in the region of the metatarsal bones, most often caused by overload, biomechanical imbalance, or trauma. The condition may be accompanied by inflammation, swelling, limited mobility, and discomfort while walking. Treatment of metatarsalgia is aimed at reducing pain, improving foot function, and preventing complications.

When is treatment for metatarsalgia required?

  • Pain in the forefoot, especially during weight-bearing activities or after prolonged walking.
  • A burning or tingling sensation on the plantar surface of the foot.
  • Swelling and changes in gait due to pain.
  • Persistence of symptoms despite rest and standard conservative measures.

Treatment methods for metatarsalgia

Conservative treatment

  • Orthopedic insoles and pads. Custom insoles help redistribute plantar pressure and reduce excessive load on the forefoot.
  • Medication therapy. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications are used to relieve inflammation and pain.
  • Physiotherapy. Therapeutic exercises and massage aimed at improving blood circulation and reducing muscle tension in the foot.
  • Footwear modification. Wearing low-heeled shoes and orthopedic footwear that provide even load distribution.

Surgical treatment

  • Steroid injections. Local corticosteroid injections may be used to rapidly reduce inflammation and pain in selected cases.
  • Surgical correction when conservative treatment is ineffective and pain persists. Procedures may involve removal of damaged soft tissues or correction of anatomical abnormalities.
  • Bony procedures (in cases of structural deformities) to restore normal foot anatomy and correct load distribution.

Advantages of metatarsalgia treatment in Belarus

  • Effective pain relief and restoration of normal foot mobility.
  • Long-term functional improvement when conservative treatment is insufficient.
  • Correction of deformities or biomechanical abnormalities affecting forefoot load.
  • Reduced risk of chronic pain and recurrence.

Recovery after metatarsalgia treatment

  • Rehabilitation with therapeutic exercises to restore normal foot mobility and strengthen muscles.
  • Continued use of orthopedic insoles and supportive devices to reduce forefoot stress.
  • Balanced activity and rest regimen to prevent recurrence and overuse injuries.

In Belarus, metatarsalgia is treated in modern orthopedic and trauma centers equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Physicians apply both conservative and surgical approaches, enabling patients to restore normal foot function and return to daily activities with reduced pain.
