Treatment of joints with stem cells
Treatment of joints with stem cells

Stem cell therapy for joint disorders is a modern treatment approach aimed at restoring damaged joint tissues. Stem cells have a unique ability to differentiate into various tissue types and stimulate regeneration of cartilage, ligaments, and other joint structures. This therapy helps reduce pain, improve joint mobility, and enhance quality of life in patients with joint diseases.

Advantages of the method

  • Tissue regeneration: stem cells promote repair of articular cartilage and surrounding structures.
  • Pain and inflammation reduction: therapy decreases inflammatory activity, leading to symptom relief.
  • Reduced need for surgery: in some cases, helps delay or avoid surgical intervention.
  • Minimally invasive: treatment is performed using targeted injections.

Indications for stem cell therapy of joints

  • Osteoarthritis at various stages.
  • Traumatic joint injuries (ligament tears, meniscal damage).
  • Rheumatoid arthritis in remission.
  • Chronic pain and limited mobility unresponsive to conventional treatments.
  • Postoperative complications following joint surgery.

How stem cell therapy for joints is performed

  1. Diagnostics. Prior to treatment, the patient undergoes evaluation including X-ray, MRI, CT, and laboratory tests to assess joint condition and determine suitability for stem cell therapy.
  2. Cell harvesting. Stem cells are typically obtained from the patient’s adipose tissue or bone marrow. The harvesting procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
  3. Processing and injection. The harvested cells are processed and then injected directly into the affected joint. The procedure usually takes about one hour and does not require hospitalization.
  4. Rehabilitation. Patients are advised to temporarily reduce physical load on the treated joint.

Risks and contraindications

Contraindications include:

  • Active or previous oncological diseases.
  • Active infections.
  • Autoimmune diseases during an acute flare.
