Tendon refixation surgeries
Tendon refixation surgeries

Tendon refixation is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring the normal position and secure attachment of tendons to bone or soft tissues. The method is used in cases of traumatic rupture, avulsion, or degenerative tendon damage that lead to pain, reduced mobility, and impaired limb function.

Indications for surgery

  • Complete or partial tendon ruptures.
  • Tendon avulsion from the anatomical attachment site.
  • Chronic pain or functional impairment due to degenerative tendon changes.
  • Reconstruction after severe trauma or sports-related injuries.
  • Complications following previous surgical interventions.

How the procedure is performed

  1. Diagnostic evaluation. Prior to surgery, comprehensive imaging is performed: ultrasound or MRI to assess tendon integrity, and X-ray to detect associated bone injuries.
  2. Anesthesia. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, regional (spinal) anesthesia, or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of injury.
  3. Surgical intervention. An incision is made in the area of the damaged tendon. The tendon is reattached using specialized sutures, suture anchors, or mini-implants. If required, additional soft tissue reconstruction is performed to reinforce the fixation site.
  4. Completion. The incision is closed and a sterile dressing is applied. Immobilization with a cast or orthosis may be required.

Rehabilitation after tendon refixation

  1. Immobilization. Postoperative fixation of the limb for up to 4–6 weeks.
  2. Physiotherapy. Laser therapy, magnetotherapy, and ultrasound therapy to reduce swelling and promote healing.
  3. Therapeutic exercise (exercise therapy). Gradual, supervised exercises to restore mobility and muscle strength.
  4. Load control. Limitation of physical activity until complete tendon healing is achieved.
