Spondylodesis
Spondylodesis

Spinal fusion (spondylodesis) is a surgical procedure aimed at permanently joining two or more vertebrae in order to restore spinal stability in cases of disease, trauma, or degenerative changes. The procedure helps relieve pain, prevent further compression of nerve roots, and improve overall spinal function. Spinal fusion is commonly used in conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, vertebral fractures, and other disorders of the spinal column.

When is spinal fusion required?

  • Spinal instability caused by degenerative changes or traumatic injury.
  • Spondylolisthesis, in which one vertebra slips forward relative to another, leading to pain and restricted mobility.
  • After spinal trauma, when stabilization of the vertebrae is necessary to prevent nerve damage.
  • Degenerative disc disease (osteochondrosis) associated with chronic pain and functional impairment.
  • Tumors or infections of the spine that require vertebral fusion to prevent further complications.

How is spinal fusion performed?

  1. Preoperative evaluation. The patient undergoes diagnostic imaging (MRI, X-ray, computed tomography) to accurately assess vertebral damage and determine the need for fusion.
  2. Anesthesia. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia due to its complexity and duration.
  3. Surgical access. The surgeon makes an incision to reach the affected vertebrae and performs the fusion using bone grafts or synthetic implants.
  4. Vertebral fixation. Metal instrumentation (screws, plates, or rods) is used to stabilize the vertebrae in the correct position. These devices may be temporary until fusion occurs or remain permanently in place.
  5. Wound closure. After fixation, the incision is closed and the patient enters the postoperative recovery period.

Advantages of spinal fusion in Belarus

  • Restoration of spinal stability, preventing further damage and improving functional capacity.
  • Effective relief of pain caused by vertebral instability or nerve compression.
  • High effectiveness in treating degenerative spinal conditions such as degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis.
  • Prevention of serious complications, including nerve root compression that may lead to weakness or paralysis.

Recovery after spinal fusion

  • Restriction of physical activity during the first postoperative weeks and use of orthopedic supports (corsets or braces) to stabilize the spine.
  • Rehabilitation and physiotherapy to strengthen back muscles and gradually restore mobility.
  • Regular follow-up visits and imaging studies to monitor the fusion process and treatment effectiveness.
  • Anti-inflammatory therapy to reduce postoperative swelling and pain.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • If back pain persists or worsens over time.
  • In cases of limited spinal mobility, vertebral displacement, or instability accompanied by pain.
  • After repeated spinal injuries leading to ongoing instability.
  • If conservative treatment is ineffective and surgical stabilization of the spine is required.

In Belarus, spinal fusion is performed in modern orthopedic and neurosurgical clinics equipped with high-precision diagnostic and surgical technologies. Surgeons use contemporary techniques, including minimally invasive approaches, which promote faster recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
