Closed fracture reduction
Closed fracture reduction

Closed fracture reduction is a surgical procedure in which the normal anatomical alignment of bone fragments is restored without making skin incisions. This method is used for fractures where open surgery is not required and bone alignment can be achieved through external manipulation.

When is closed fracture reduction indicated?

  • In fractures without severe displacement of bone fragments but requiring anatomical realignment.
  • In uncomplicated fractures where bone fragments can be repositioned without open surgical intervention.
  • In injuries where correct bone healing must be ensured while avoiding invasive procedures.
  • In the treatment of limb fractures, such as those involving the shoulder, femur, or lower leg.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Preparation. The patient undergoes preliminary imaging studies (X-ray, MRI) to determine the type and exact location of the fracture.
  2. Anesthesia. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation to relieve pain and ensure patient comfort.
  3. Bone reduction. Using external manual techniques, the physician carefully repositions the bone fragments to restore their normal anatomical alignment.
  4. Fixation. After reduction, the fracture is stabilized using a cast, splint, or orthopedic fixation devices. In some cases, special braces or supports may be required.
  5. Verification. Post-procedural X-ray imaging is performed to confirm correct alignment and stability of the bone fragments.

Advantages of closed fracture reduction

  • Minimal tissue trauma, as no surgical incisions are made.
  • Faster recovery compared to open surgical procedures.
  • Lower risk of infection than procedures involving open surgery.
  • Shorter rehabilitation period due to the minimally invasive nature of the technique.

Recovery after closed reduction

  • Use of a cast or splint to maintain fracture stability.
  • Rehabilitation exercises to restore mobility and muscle strength.
  • Regular radiographic follow-up to monitor bone healing.
  • Anti-inflammatory therapy to reduce pain and swelling at the fracture site.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • If severe pain, swelling, deformity, or restricted movement is present.
  • In cases of displaced fractures that may require surgical intervention.
  • If there is no improvement with standard fracture treatment and further intervention is needed.

In Belarus, closed fracture reduction is performed in modern orthopedic and trauma centers equipped with advanced diagnostic and procedural technologies. Experienced specialists use gentle, evidence-based techniques that allow patients to recover quickly and reduce the risk of complications.
