Treatment of macular hole
Treatment of macular hole

A macular hole is a defect in the central part of the retina (the macula) that leads to deterioration of central vision, distortion of objects, and the appearance of a dark spot in the visual field. Without treatment, the condition may progress and result in irreversible loss of visual acuity.

Symptoms of a macular hole

  • Blurring and distortion of central vision.
  • Appearance of a gray or black spot in the center of the visual field.
  • Difficulties with reading, writing, and recognizing faces.
  • Straight lines appear wavy or curved.

Diagnostic methods

  • Ophthalmoscopy. Allows detection of a macular defect during fundus examination.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Provides detailed cross-sectional images of the retinal layers.
  • Fluorescein angiography. Used to assess the condition of retinal blood vessels.

Treatment methods for a macular hole

  • Vitrectomy. The main treatment method, in which the vitreous body causing traction on the retina is removed, and the macular hole is closed using a gas bubble or silicone oil.
  • Intravitreal injections. Administration of medications that promote retinal healing, used in selected cases with small or early-stage holes.
  • Laser photocoagulation. Applied in specific situations to prevent progression of the defect.

Recovery after surgery

  • During the first days, it is essential to follow the physician’s recommendations (including maintaining a specific head position when gas tamponade is used).
  • Limitation of physical activity and visual strain.
  • Use of prescribed eye drops to accelerate healing.
  • Complete recovery may take several months, depending on the stage of the disease.

Advantages of modern macular hole treatment in Belarus

  • Vitrectomy allows closure of the macular hole and visual improvement in up to 90% of cases.
  • Modern microsurgical techniques significantly reduce the risk of complications.
  • Early diagnosis and timely intervention help prevent irreversible vision loss.

In Belarus, treatment of macular holes is performed in modern ophthalmology clinics equipped with advanced surgical technology. Procedures are carried out by experienced retinal surgeons, enabling visual recovery and preventing further disease progression.
