Treatment of astigmatism
Treatment of astigmatism

Astigmatism is a refractive error in which the cornea or the crystalline lens has an irregular shape, causing light rays to focus at multiple points on the retina instead of a single focal point. This leads to blurred vision, image distortion, and reduced visual clarity.

Symptoms of astigmatism

  • Blurred or distorted vision at various distances.
  • Rapid eye fatigue and eye strain, especially during reading.
  • Headaches and ocular discomfort.
  • Difficulty maintaining visual focus.

Diagnostic methods for astigmatism

  • Visometry. Measurement of visual acuity with and without correction.
  • Autorefractometry. Automated assessment of the eye’s refractive power.
  • Corneal topography. Computer-based mapping of the corneal surface to assess its shape.
  • Retinoscopy (skiascopy). Evaluation of light refraction within the eye.

Methods of astigmatism treatment

  • Spectacle correction. Special cylindrical lenses are used to compensate for optical distortion.
  • Contact lenses. Toric contact lenses provide more precise correction.
  • Laser vision correction (LASIK, PRK, SMILE). Permanently reshapes the cornea to eliminate astigmatism.
  • Phakic intraocular lens implantation. Used in cases of high-degree astigmatism.
  • Keratoplasty. Corneal transplantation for complex or advanced forms of the condition.

Advantages of astigmatism treatment in Belarus

In Belarus, the diagnosis and treatment of astigmatism are carried out in leading ophthalmology centers that use advanced laser technologies, high-quality optical correction, and modern surgical methods to achieve stable and precise visual outcomes.
