Accommodation spasm (pseudo-myopia) is a functional disorder of the eye’s ciliary muscle that leads to a temporary loss of the ability to focus clearly at different distances. It most commonly occurs in children, adolescents, and people who work extensively with computers, causing eye fatigue, blurred vision, and headaches.
Symptoms of accommodation spasm
- Blurred vision when shifting focus from near to far objects.
- Rapid eye fatigue and a sensation of visual strain.
- Frequent headaches and eye discomfort.
- A feeling of dryness, burning, or “sand” in the eyes.
- Intermittent visual impairment that improves after rest.
Causes of accommodation spasm
- Excessive visual load (computer work, prolonged reading, intensive study).
- Inadequate lighting during visual tasks.
- Lack of regular breaks and eye exercises during near work.
- Low physical activity and impaired blood circulation in the periocular region.
- Poor posture and disorders of the cervical spine.
Diagnostic methods
- Visometry. Assessment of visual acuity at near and far distances.
- Refractometry. Measurement of ocular refraction, often under cycloplegia.
- Accommodography. Evaluation of ciliary muscle function.
- Computer perimetry. Examination of visual fields to exclude other pathologies.
Treatment methods for accommodation spasm
- Eye drops. Medications that relax the ciliary muscle (atropine, tropicamide, cyclopentolate).
- Hardware-based therapy. Use of laser, magnetic, and color-impulse stimulation to train accommodation.
- Eye exercises. Special гимнастика to relieve tension and improve focusing ability.
- Neck and shoulder massage. Improves blood circulation and reduces muscular spasm.
- Physiotherapy. Electrostimulation and magnetotherapy to support ocular muscle function.
Recovery after treatment
- Regular performance of accommodation training exercises.
- Proper regulation of visual workload with scheduled breaks.
- Use of adequate lighting and an ergonomic workstation.
- Follow-up with an ophthalmologist, especially for children and adolescents.
Advantages of modern accommodation spasm treatment in Belarus
- Hardware-based methods allow restoration of visual function without long-term medication use.
- A comprehensive approach addresses both symptoms and underlying causes.
- Early diagnosis and therapy help prevent progression to true myopia.
In Belarus, accommodation spasm is treated in modern ophthalmology centers equipped with specialized hardware systems for accommodation training and physiotherapeutic interventions. Experienced specialists develop individualized vision rehabilitation programs, helping to eliminate pseudo-myopia and prevent its progression.
