Scleroplasty
Scleroplasty

Scleroplasty is a microsurgical procedure aimed at strengthening the posterior pole of the eyeball and slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness). The method is primarily used in cases of rapidly progressive myopia, especially in children and adolescents.

When is scleroplasty indicated?

  • Rapid progression of myopia (more than 1 diopter per year).
  • High myopia (–6.0 diopters or greater).
  • Documented elongation of the posterior segment of the eyeball on diagnostic imaging.
  • Ineffectiveness of conservative methods (glasses, contact lenses, visual exercises) in slowing visual deterioration.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Preoperative evaluation and preparation. This includes refractometry, ophthalmoscopy, and ocular ultrasound.
  2. Insertion of a reinforcing material. Through a microincision, a biocompatible material (collagen, silicone, or autologous tissue) is placed onto the sclera.
  3. Fixation of the supporting framework. The implanted material forms a reinforcing scaffold that limits further scleral stretching.
  4. Completion of the procedure. Sutures are usually not required, and postoperative recovery is relatively rapid.

Types of scleroplasty

  • Conventional scleroplasty. Reinforcement of the posterior segment of the eyeball using biomaterials.
  • Injection scleroplasty. Administration of a liquid reinforcing substance via microinjections.
  • Laser-assisted scleroplasty. Used as an adjunct technique to stimulate connective tissue formation.

Postoperative recovery

  • Visual stabilization typically occurs within several weeks.
  • Physical activity should be limited during the first months after surgery.
  • Topical eye drops are prescribed to promote healing.
  • Regular follow-up with an ophthalmologist is required.

Advantages of modern scleroplasty techniques in Belarus

  • Minimally invasive approach with short rehabilitation time.
  • Significant slowing of myopia progression.
  • High safety profile and proven effectiveness in children and adolescents.

In Belarus, scleroplasty is performed in modern ophthalmology clinics equipped with high-precision surgical technology. Experienced specialists use gentle scleral reinforcement techniques, allowing effective control of progressive myopia and preservation of visual function.
