Pediatric ophthalmology

Pediatric ophthalmology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye diseases in children. Early detection of visual disorders allows timely correction of refractive errors, prevention of strabismus and amblyopia, and identification of congenital or acquired ophthalmic conditions.

When is a pediatric ophthalmologist consultation needed?

  • Routine eye examinations for newborns, preschool children, and school-aged children.
  • Decreased visual acuity, frequent complaints of eye fatigue.
  • Strabismus, nystagmus, inflammatory eye diseases.
  • Congenital anomalies of the eyes, lacrimal ducts, or eyelids.
  • Eye injuries, redness, photophobia, excessive tearing.

Main diagnostic methods in pediatric ophthalmology

  • Autorefraction and visometry – assessment of visual acuity and detection of refractive errors.
  • Biomicroscopy – detailed examination of the anterior segment of the eye.
  • Ophthalmoscopy – evaluation of the fundus and retinal condition.
  • Gonioscopy – examination of the anterior chamber angle when glaucoma is suspected.
  • Ocular ultrasound – diagnosis of congenital anomalies and vitreous body pathologies.
  • Perimetry – assessment of visual fields.

Treatment of eye diseases in children

  • Correction of refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) using spectacles or contact lenses.
  • Treatment of strabismus and amblyopia using hardware-based and vision therapy techniques.
  • Conservative and surgical treatment of glaucoma, cataracts, and inflammatory eye diseases.
  • Physiotherapy procedures aimed at improving visual functions.
  • Ophthalmic surgery for congenital and acquired ocular pathologies.

Advantages of modern pediatric ophthalmology in Belarus

  • Advanced diagnostic technologies enable early detection of eye diseases.
  • Hardware-based amblyopia therapy improves the effectiveness of vision correction.
  • Minimally invasive surgical techniques reduce rehabilitation time.
  • A comprehensive approach improves prognosis in pediatric eye diseases.

In Belarus, pediatric ophthalmology is represented by modern diagnostic centers and specialized clinics that apply advanced diagnostic methods, hardware-based therapies, and microsurgical techniques.
