Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a modern, non-invasive imaging technique used to examine the retina, optic nerve, and anterior segment of the eye. The method is based on high-frequency optical scanning and provides detailed cross-sectional images of ocular tissues. OCT is essential for diagnosing glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and many other eye diseases.
When is OCT prescribed?
- Decreased visual acuity, appearance of spots, distortions, or a “hazy veil” in the field of vision.
- Diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma, macular holes, and retinal detachment.
- Diabetic retinopathy and macular edema.
- Assessment of the optic nerve in neurological disorders.
- Preoperative evaluation before laser procedures and ocular surgery.
How is the examination performed?
- Preparation. The procedure usually does not require pupil dilation, although in some cases the ophthalmologist may instill eye drops.
- Scanning. The patient fixes their gaze on a target while the device captures layer-by-layer images of the retina and optic nerve.
- Data analysis. Specialized software processes the scans and generates detailed images of ocular structures.
- Medical conclusion. The ophthalmologist evaluates the images to identify pathological changes and assess disease progression.
Types of optical coherence tomography
- Retinal OCT. Examination of the macular area to detect degenerative changes and edema.
- Optic nerve OCT. Used for the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma, optic neuropathies, and inflammatory conditions.
- Anterior segment OCT. Assessment of the cornea, anterior chamber angle, and postoperative outcomes.
Advantages of optical coherence tomography in Belarus
- High accuracy. Enables detection of even minimal structural changes in the retina and optic nerve.
- Painless procedure. Non-contact examination without discomfort.
- Fast performance. The examination takes only 5–10 minutes.
- Safety. No ionizing radiation is used, allowing repeated examinations.
In Belarus, optical coherence tomography is performed in modern ophthalmology centers equipped with high-precision diagnostic systems. OCT allows eye diseases to be detected at the earliest stages, enabling timely treatment and helping to prevent vision loss.
